Have you considered looking for a job in another field?

When you’re on the outside looking in, you can spend a lot of time thinking about who to contact first and how to approach someone. You know what you don’t know, and that can make you preoccupied with imposter syndrome instead of taking action. I get it. This happens to me often.

When it comes to the field of sustainability, I’ve had questions for a while.

  • How does someone enter this field from another discipline?
  • Do you need to go back to school?
  • What requirements need to be satisfied?

Thanks to Vanessa Thompson, some of my questions have been answered. Vanessa is the Managing Director of The Sustainability Experts. When I spoke with her for the podcast, Vanessa connected environmental education to roles that need to be filled in the sustainability field. We talked about certifications, transferable skills, how to show your work, and what types of job titles might be on the horizon.

Here are a few insights shared by Vanessa:

  • Know your core competencies.
  • Identify the certifications you might need.
  • Win-wins are possible with a sustainability mindset and a balanced approach.
